John S. Taras, M.D.


Dr. John S. Taras John S. Taras, M.D. has been entrusted with the care of some of the most expensive hands in the world. As one of the staff surgeons for Philadelphia professional and collegiate sports teams—including the Eagles, Flyers, Phantoms, St. Joseph’s University, Drexel University and Rowan College— Dr. Taras has been responsible for the treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic and chronic hand injuries requiring nothing short of perfect recovery.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Dr. Taras earned his B.A. and M.D. at The University of Michigan in an accelerated six year program. After his internship in general surgery and residency in orthopedic surgery at New York University/ Bellevue Hospital, Dr. Taras was awarded a Hand Surgery/Microsurgery Fellowship at Duke University and the Traveling Hand Surgery Fellowship at Lund University in Sweden and University of Bern in Switzerland.

Since that time, he has been appointed to the medical staffs of regional hospitals including Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery; and Drexel University School of Medicine as Chief of Hand Surgery, in affiliation with Tenet Health System at Hahnemann University Hospital. Dr. Taras has published more than fifty journal articles and abstracts and has co-authored a book on the latest developments in flexor tendon repair. His research has led to methods and procedures enhancing the treatment of tendon injuries, tendonitis, nerve injuries, and fractures of the hand and wrist.

Dr. Taras is an active participant in international, national, and regional hand surgery organizations and has served as president to several societies. He has been recognized as a “Top Doc” in the field of hand surgery by Philadelphia Magazine and is cited by "Best Doctors in America".
